Cooking Fresh Food for Dogs: The CookA in Our Real-World Test
Real people, real dogs, real experiences: four members of the Dogorama community tested the CookA for six weeks. The result? Honest reviews, fascinating observations, and a genuine insight into how the CookA makes home cooking for dogs that bit easier. We summarise the test findings here – you can find the full review over at Dogorama.
Home-cooked dog food made with fresh ingredients is something many dog owners dream of for their pets. But not everyone feels confident enough to take the plunge. There's the uncertainty of whether you can actually meet your dog's nutritional needs. The question of how to fit cooking into a busy daily routine. The worry about getting it right so the food is both tasty and easy on the stomach.
The CookA, as the centrepiece of the LuckyChef nutrition system, is designed to remove exactly these barriers. Here's what the complete system includes: the smart kitchen appliance CookA, the LuckyChef RecipeWorld with over 300 recipes individually balanced to each dog's needs, and the supplement formulated to complement those recipes.
The Dogorama testers – Jessica, Guido, Susanne and Elli – were won over by the nutritional concept from the start. But does the CookA live up to its promise?
After a joint kick-off session at LuckyChef, the testers took the CookA home and put it to work in their daily routines: setting up a dog profile, choosing recipes, weighing out ingredients, letting the appliance do the cooking, adding supplements, and observing just how well the whole system performs in practice.
After six weeks, the verdict is clearly positive. Overall rating: 4.4 out of 5 paws. Themes such as confidence in nutritional coverage, time savings, and trust in home cooking stand out consistently throughout the test.
Where the CookA Impressed in the Test
What did the testers make of the CookA? One theme comes up again and again: the CookA gives dog owners confidence when it comes to cooking fresh food at home. With the CookA, anyone can prepare home-cooked dog food without having to think through nutrients, quantities and processes from scratch at every meal. The dog profile in the app means you can be sure that every portion is right for your dog.
"I love the app too. The fact that all recipes are adjusted based on the dog's profile is the feature I appreciate most."
"The app is really clear and well-designed. I love the recipes and the filter feature is brilliant too."
"The CookA is a great entry point into home cooking. Pacco's BCS has already improved."
Good to know: The BCS (Body Condition Score) is a measure of whether a dog is at its ideal weight. The BCS is automatically factored into recipe balancing, so every portion delivers exactly the nutrients and quantities your dog needs to reach or maintain a healthy weight.
Time savings also featured prominently in the test. While the CookA cooks, stirs or steams away on its own, you don't need to stand over it. For many dog owners, that's precisely what makes fresh cooking a realistic option.
"The CookA makes cooking for my dog so much more enjoyable and appealing. I've ended up cooking for my little one far more often because of it."
"I find it extremely practical – I mainly use it as a sous chef and haven't even tried all the functions yet. What I love most is how easy it is to use. The CookA works so independently, which I think is its best feature."
Then there's the most important question of all: did the dogs actually enjoy the food? Absolutely! The fresh-cooked meals went down a treat across the board – even with dogs who are normally fussy eaters.
"The cooked menus are wonderful – Summer adores the food. It would be great if you could save your own recipes too."
"She's thriving on the food. She's loved absolutely everything we've cooked."
"He enjoyed almost all the recipes. My personal favourite is a creation of my own, based on the Chicken with Herbs recipe."

Where the Test Revealed Limitations
Any genuine real-world test also shows where there's still room for improvement. Testers mentioned requests for additional app features such as a weekly meal planner, better display readability, and simpler everyday recipes. Some would also have liked more accessible or budget-friendly ingredient options.
"Sourcing ingredients is generally tricky – the meat content in the recipes is too high and too expensive. I miss simpler everyday dishes; too many recipes call for costly or hard-to-find ingredients."
"Possible improvements: a notification on your phone when it's done would be brilliant! Also a reminder to attach the pot properly. I'd love to be able to set and skip the mixing duration in recipes myself."
Recipes using as few readily available ingredients as possible can be found under the "Basic" tag: Browse Basic recipes for dogs
Recipes with a lower meat content are tagged "reduced meat content": Browse low-meat recipes for dogs
And yes – the CookA takes a lot of the work off your hands, but not everything. Fresh ingredients still need to be bought and prepared.
"Summer has only ever had dry or wet food before. With the CookA meals, I do need to plan things a bit differently – you can't just quickly tip food into the bowl. There's some prep time involved, and you need to be there to add ingredients at the right moment."
Feedback like this is invaluable to us. It shows not only what's already working well, but also where we can continue to improve.
Verdict
The Dogorama test showed exactly where home cooking so often falls short in everyday life: time, uncertainty, and a lack of structure. The CookA addresses all three.
What was particularly encouraging to see: the testers' enthusiasm carried right through from the very first session to the sight of happy dogs at their bowls.
We continue to develop the CookA and our entire concept together with our community. Every piece of feedback, every experience, and every real-world test helps us do better – for you, and above all for your dog.
